Background Information

Shoreless Lake School (SLS) at Murcia was founded in 1997 as the Spanish branch of SLS-New Jersey, a school established in 1991 by the Reverend Alfonso Gálvez. SLS is a private, non-profit American school that offers offering a Catholic education from fifth through twelfth grades. The main campus, specially built for SLS, is located in Totana on a property called “La Isla”. SLS has a branch campus in Wisconsin (USA); SLS in New Jersey was closed.

SLS also has a Student Activity Center located in a property called “El Pedregal” in Mazarrón, Murcia. The Student Center, only a few yards from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, is home to the boys on weekends and vacations. It includes students’ sleeping quarters, recreation areas, the main library, a study center, a chapel, a cinema room, playing fields, and scenic grounds for students to enjoy nature.

Although not affiliated with any diocese, SLS is a Catholic school. The Spanish Ministry of Education has approved SLS to run from grades five through twelve as an “American school for Spanish and foreign students.” The Spanish government recognized the organization Mar Sin Orillas as an official, legal, non-profit organization, separate from the Society of Jesus Christ the Priest, to oversee the school's financial operations and to run the school.

The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) has accredited SLS as a “unique school offering quality education to students.”

Academically, SLS offers a college preparatory education; students follow an American curriculum, and graduates are qualified to attend an American or European university. All students take PSAT, SAT Reasoning, SAT Subject tests, and AP exams. Students applying to a Spanish university take the Selectividad, the general entrance examination for Spanish universities.
